Is Cheap Weed Worth Buying?

Buying cannabis can be overwhelming. You walk into a dispensary or jump online and are met with a ton of options—how do you choose? Then you notice there are options at high and low price points. Are the cheaper options worth it or are you getting ripped off? How do you even ‌navigate all of your options?

Hopefully, we can make things a lot less intimidating as we take some time and space to tackle the topic of cheap weed.  Whether you’re buying weed online from an online dispensary or going in person, here are all the tips you need to consider a cheap weed.

Quality

While there are some exceptions to the rule, generally‌, pricing does follow quality. The thing about quality, though, is that it likely doesn’t mean what you think it means.

Quality isn’t just THC.

It’s common to assume the higher THC content, the higher the quality of weed. Speak to any budtender, though, and they’ll tell you it’s a bit more complicated than that. In the modern world of weed, we have a more sophisticated understanding of the marijuana flower and many industry experts are moving towards using the entourage effect to determine quality (especially with medicinal use).

Entourage Effect

When we talk about cannabis compounds, we’re all on a first name basis with THC and CBD but cannabis is an incredibly complex plant. It has over 60 cannabinoid compounds within the over 400 chemical entities that make up the composition of the marijuana plant.

The entourage effect refers to the diversity of compounds (like cannabinoids and terpenes) found in the cannabis plant that work together for a better product and experience. If you want to go deep into the science of the entourage effect, I invite you to geek out over the work of Dr. Ethan Russo – a neurologist and pharmacologist who has long studied cannabis compounds and how they affect the body. He gives readers a thorough (and super science-y) look into the entourage effect in his entry into the British Journal of Pharmacology called Taming THC: potential cannabis synergy and phytocannabinoid-terpenoid entourage effects

Ultimately, quality is a lot more complicated than THC content alone. So, it’s not always advisable to assume that the buds on the lower end of THC percentage are cheaper because they are lacking in quality. They might have a magically diverse set of compounds, making them the perfect choice for you.

Fresh Bud Old Bud

Something else that may affect the cost of your weed is age. Marijuana has an optimal shelf life to ensure you’re getting buds that aren’t too dry and are still full of flavour, aroma, and potency. Once weed has passed (or is creeping up on) its best before date, you might find yourself staring at a decent discount. Is it worth buying, though? Yes! We are experts at properly storing weed, and so, even when discounted due to age, you’re still getting a great product. If weed has been harvested and dried properly, it can be stored (properly) for upwards of a year without losing too much of its charm.

You will probably find that the weed your friend has had for a year isn’t in tip-top shape like our sale items, though. This is because most people cannot keep their weed in optimal conditions without fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

A High That’s Just Right

Some cheaper weed options may not get you as high, but often that’s actually preferable. Everyone has a different tolerance level and so getting as high as humanly possible isn’t always what users are going for. Nor should it be. You’re supposed to enjoy yourself when you smoke weed and I think we all have hit that “too high” mark ‌in our toking lives – it’s not fun.

Cannabis Overstock

Marijuana plants are breathing, living things, which naturally means there’s some level of unpredictability in the growing process. Sometimes plants will overproduce flowers, which can create an imbalance of supply and demand. When this happens, dispensaries may opt to discount the marijuana products. Does this mean the quality of the product is not up to par? Absolutely not. Nature just gave you a pretty sweet opportunity to get high-quality products at a lower than usual price point.

The Bottom Line

Our last tip surrounding cheap weed is to talk with a budtender the next time you are in person or using an online dispensary. If a price seems too good to be true, just ask them why. Most cannabis shops are keen on providing excellent customer service; your experience will be no different. The budtender will be knowledgeable about all the cannabis products and high-quality weed for the best deal or at least affordable prices.
